The School of Cultural and Language Studies works with students to develop an understanding of education in its broadest social, cultural and historical context, with a strong focus on equipping students to deal with current and future trends and practices in the educational workplace. A strong commitment to social justice and equity underpins the work of the School.
The School offers pre-service, in-service and postgraduate courses and conducts research in the following areas:
- The social and cultural context of education
- Global, cross-cultural and gender inclusive education
- Education policy
- Teaching English as a first and second language
- Adult and workplace literacy
- Teaching languages other than English (LOTE)
- Teacher librarianship.
- Children's literature and literacy development
- Visual and media literacy and popular culture.
- Information technology literacy
- Multiliteracies
- Curriculum studies in: Film and Media Studies, Business and Technology Education, Social and Environmental Education, Geography, History and Economics, Legal Studies Curriculum.
The School also curates the One Teacher School Museum which houses important records of Queensland educational history and provides conducted tours for school children and other groups.
Academic staff in the school have a strong record in competitive research grants, published research, consultancies, and currently supervise more than 40 postgraduate students in masters and doctoral programs.
