The socio-cultural area focuses its teaching and research on the central question of understanding the role of culture and society in relation to contemporary education. Drawing on sociological, philosophical, historical and cultural strands of thought it is argued that education and schooling take place within certain historical contexts that are closely linked to economic, political, social and cultural change. Units serviced by this strand attempt to better prepare teachers by providing the intellectual and analytical tools to understand and respond to such changing contexts in an informed and ethical manner.
